Baby on board? Think twice before stepping out in stilettos. Pregnant women who wear high heels, ballet pumps, Ugg boots and flip flops are setting themselves up for painful foot problems, according to a poll that was reported by the BBC.

A survey of 1,000 moms-to-be from the British Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists found that many wore fashionable footwear on a regular basis. While half the women admitted feeling pressured to keep up with celebrity trends in footwear, seven in 10 said they were plagued by swollen ankles, swollen feet and arch and heel pain during their pregnancy.

Shoes like stilettos are on the no-no list for pregnant women since they can alter a woman’s posture, place pressure on her back and knees and shorten the calf muscles, according to podiatrist Lorraine Jones.

High heels also "place extra pressure on your joints when they are already under strain - which can result in a host of foot, leg and back problems and could increase the likelihood of falls," she told the BBC.

Of the women surveyed, 66% said they regularly wore flip flops, 32% wore high heels, 30% wore Uggs and 53% wore ballet pumps.

Both weight gain and an altered center of gravity can cause sway-backed posture in pregnant women, and this can put pressure on the knees, legs and feet, according to the American Podiatric Medical Association. To prevent foot disorders, the association recommends avoiding high heels and instead, wearing shoes that have a strong, supportive arch.

Not that any pregnant woman wants to hear it, but the society recommends "supportive, wide fitting shoes." The American Podiatric Medical Association suggests that moms-to-be wear "comfortable footwear that provides extra support and shock absorption."

Don’t want to look like a fashion disaster? Keep in mind that the expectant celebrities shown tottering on four-inch heels don’t wear those shoes for very long.

"Many of the pregnant celebrities you see wearing high heels in magazines are attending events," Jones said. "So like them, try to keep your high-heeled, high-fashion shoes for a special occasion and stick to a more supportive shoe on a daily basis."
